The obverse, (heads), has 156 outer rim denticals and features the image of Australia's, (England's), Monarch at the time, King George V facing to the left, with the legend reading the Latin "GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:"
This translates roughly to "George V, by the grace of God, King of all Britons, defender of the faith,
Emperor of India"
The reverse, (tails), has 148 outer rim denticals, with the words "ONE HALF PENNY" in the center, a scroll below wording, all surrounded by a ring of inner denticals. The 1923 halfpenny has no mint mark.
Outer rim legend reads "COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA", with the date at the bottom, known as the 'COA' reverse.
Mintage figures indicate 1,113,000, however most of these were dated '1922', with only around 15,000 dated '1923'.
Sources conflict a little, however most seem to point to the '1922' dated coins being minted in Sydney, while the '1923' dated coins being minted in Melbourne.

Strong caution should be taken when purchasing a 1923 halfpenny, as it is amongst the most commonly counterfeited coin in the world. As such, many of the coins being sold are fakes, some as a deliberate attempt to defraud, others through lack of knowledge on behalf on the seller who has previously been defrauded. Several good guides to help in identifying fake 1923 halfpennies are available on the internet, and are well worth reading prior to considering purchase of such a coin.
