After KGV passed in 1936, Edward VIII was monarch for less than a year before abdicating, leaving the throne to King George VI. While the proofs were made, the mints hadn't quite managed to manufacture any coins during KEVIII's reign, as such no KEVIII coins were minted. From 1938 the mints were ready with the dies for the new monarch, KGVI, and minting commenced. KGVI reigned until 1952.
The 1938 and 1939 halfpennies retained the 'Commonwealth Of Australia' reverse as used in KGV series, however in 1939 the reverse design changed to the 'Kangaroo' reverse as was being used with KGVI pennies.

Dates not minted: 1937
The 1939 'roo reverse' is considered a scarce coin, due to it's relatively low mintage. Other harder dates include 1942(m), 1944(m) and 1952 A. halfpennies, which are scarcer in higher grades.
The halfpenny was minted in Melbourne from 1938 until 1944. During 1942 and 1943 the halfpenny was also minted in Calcutta, India, and in Perth, Australia. Perth then took over primary production of the Australian halfpenny, with only a couple of exceptions where coins were also minted in Melbourne in 1948, and in London in 1951.
