ANDA Coin Grading Guide
The Australian Numismatic Dealer’s Association has published a great article on ‘Grading Commonwealth Coins’ on their website which gives a good description, images, breakdown, and reference for grading Commonwealth coins.
If you have read this far and not seen this article, you should. It is the best quick reference I have found yet, and is the cumulative position determined by professional dealers around Australia as to what they believe is the best way to assess a coins grade.
While I can't copy their article, I can provide a link. (see page 3).
Prefixes and abbreviations used with ANDA coin grading guide.
Prefix | Description |
a | about or almost |
g | good |
ch | choice |
gem | gem |
Abbreviation | Description |
G | Good |
VG | Very Good |
F | Fine |
VF | Very Fine |
EF | Extremely Fine |
UNC | Uncirculated |
Proof | Proof |
Only certain combinations of prefix and abbreviation are used together.
‘Choice’ and ‘Gem’ are ONLY used to elaborate on uncirculated coins, (and only if considered better than uncirculated).
There is a formal grade between EF and UNC: “aUNC” , (about Uncirculated), which is used to identify a coin that looks like it has never been circulated, however has been.
Examples of how you might see people referring to a coin’s grade:
aVG (about Very Good)
VG (Very Good)
gVG (good Very Good)
Most of the time you won’t see people trying to refine past basic grade, although once you become familiar with assessing coins, you will notice significant variation of detail in coins between grades, and quite often varying grades between obverse and reverse of the same coin.
