1920 plain
1920 Australian Penny
(plain - no dots, Indian obverse)
There is much conjecture over whether the 'no dot' variety, either in the Indian obverse or the London obverse actually exists, or whether they are all actually 'dot below bottom scrolls' that have been subject to a die fill error, resulting in the dot being missing.
Pricing guides and other literature on varieties and errors all point to the existance of the 'no dot' variation, so for all intents and purposes, they exist now, whether by design or by error, and are valued and assessed differently to other 1920 Australian pennies as a result.
My personal opinion is that they are likely to actually be die fill errors, however I have not seen conclusive proof, one way or the other.
I would refer anyone wanting to know more on to a good thread in the 'Coin Communty Forum', where this is discussed by a recognised expert with the 1920 penny.
As identified in the thread, key indicators can be identified to show matchings with 'dot below' pennies, as matchings have been done with die pairings, rather than master die pairings, isolating down to the individual dies used in manufacture. This does indicate to me that 'no dots' were actually 'dot belows' with die fill.
